Distribution of Solidobalanus enbergi in British Columbia in British Columbia

Species Information

Description

Size small, up to three-quarters of an inch (18 mm) in diameter and a little more in height. Shell a steep-walled cone, occasionally tubular. Deep furrows are usually present between the unequal ribs. The wall-plates are solid, and internally they are finely ribbed below the short sheath. The orifice is small, oval, and with the edge unbroken; its position is not apical as the carina is longer than the other plates.

Colour

Dirty white; surface mostly covered with epidermis.

Distribution

Alaska, south to Seal Rocks (Oregon); Puget Sound; Port San Juan, Vancouver Island. Singly, below low-tide level.

Notes

This rather rarely seen barnacle is occasionally foud growing with, or on, Balanus nubilus or on coral but never in closely associated groups.
